Charity & Social Development Work | 16 years to date
Over the past 16 years, the IWC has been actively involved in charity and community/social developmental work in a number of ways. A significant amount of work has been done at the orphanages, homes and developmental centres to ensure that proper facilities are available for use at these locations. The club has worked to provide renovations to bathrooms, sleeping areas, kitchens, laundries and administrative offices. The IWC has also ensured that basic utilities such as running water, heating, electricity and sewerage systems are available where such assistance was necessary.
In addition to providing assistance through the provision of renovations and utilities, the IWC places strong focus on direct engagement with the children at the orphanages and at the refugee centre. Volunteers frequently visit the orphanages to provide support through interaction with the children and staff, in addition to the provision of clothing, books, toys and other educational aids.
Empowerment | Human Development
The IWC is strongly committed to human development initiatives. It is our belief that programmes such as these not only empower those involved, but enhance their knowledge and skills in such a way that they are better able to integrate into society and care for themselves and their families upon advancement from training. To this aim, the IWC has proudly funded vocational programmes such as sewing at the UNHCR’s Women and Youth facility. Volunteers have also provided their services as teachers at this facility.
Fundraising | Activities & Events
In order to provide assistance to the numerous requests submitted by members and interested parties to the club, a number of fund raising initiatives are scheduled throughout each year. Among the largest of such events are the annual Christmas and Novruz bazaars which feature a large number of booths with representation from a cross-section of international groups, local organizations and businesses, special interest groups, orphanages and homes. Such booths run by IWC volunteers as the Handicrafts, the Tombola and the Bake stand also prove to be excellent ways of raising the much needed funds that allow the IWC to take action throughout the year. Funding is also raised through proceeds from monthly IWC lunches, ticket fees at calendar events, and annual contributions from members’ registration and renewal fees.
2010-2011 Projects | The Playground Project
In the 2010-2011 period, primary focus will be placed upon enhancing the social and physical development of children in need through the provision of Playground equipment and educational/ developmental support at a number of comprehensively assessed orphanages. There is a substantial amount of research that shows the clear link between play and brain development, motor-skills, and social capabilities. This body of research highlights the fact that learning; whether emotional, social, motor or cognitive, is accelerated, facilitated and fuelled by the simple act of play. It is strongly felt that this is an aspect of developmental support that can be provided through the funds raised by IWC activities and through the support given to the IWC by its network of partners and resources.
We welcome your support to the club as we strive to put our plans into Action this year through the Playground Project and other such projects throughout the year.
